Everyone gets unknown calls from time to time. These calls don’t bother most people unless the calls become persistent. When this happens, you may want know who this person is and what they want.

I don’t feel like calling the number back, but I also would like to know who is bothering me with these calls. So, in the past, the first thing I have done is get on one of the major search engines and type in that phone number to see what I can find. On one occasion I had luck using this method. The number was a landline phone and I found it in public records. I found out who the person was and what city they lived in and that was pretty much good enough for me, considering it didn’t cost me anything.

One other occasion, though, the phone number I was searching happened to be a cell phone number. I searched for about a good hour trying to find information about this number online. I tried WhitePages.com, the search engines, and even sites that promised to give me cell phone number information for free. What I found out after all this search was that cell phone number owner information is always going to cost a fee – always.

Being inquisitive, or as my friends say – nosy, I had to find out why I couldn’t get information on phone numbers like cell phones and fax lines for free. What I found out is that this information is not considered public information. Privacy issues comes into play and that made some sense to me. I don’t want my cell phone number available for anyone to find out.

But then I found out that I could actually find owner information behind any cell phone. From what I gathered, major cell phone carriers, who own and control the data behind cell phone numbers, started selling this information to third party websites a while back. These sites have offered this information to anyone who is willing to pay a small fee.

So, after discovering this, I had to make a decision whether getting to the bottom of who had been persistently calling me without leaving messages was worth the price of a pizza. In that particular case, it was, and I was glad I did. It turned out to be an old friend who wasn’t leaving a message because my voice mail wasn’t working properly, and he wasn’t sure that he had actually reached the right phone number for me.

So, I found out a few things. First, that I can find out owner information behind any cell phone number. Secondly, there is no such thing as a free reverse number lookup.
